Helping Saint Joseph’s
Students Live Greater
The President’s Magis Scholarship Initiative
In the modern interpretation of the Jesuit principle of magis, we are inspired by the many ways in which a Saint Joseph’s education encourages us to live greater. Magis becomes a powerful motivator for us to enhance our commitment to providing access to an educational environment that integrates academic rigor, a commitment to social justice, service to others, and enables our students to become global citizens serving the greater good.
The magis calls us to do more for our students, and we are inspired to enhance Saint Joseph’s educational mission through the President’s Magis Scholarship Initiative. Scholarship is the lifeblood of a Jesuit education, which was founded on providing access to learning and developing the breadth and depth of each person.
This initiative focuses on making a Saint Joseph’s education available to more deserving students – regardless of their financial means – who are motivated and attracted to our Jesuit ideals and values. Enhanced scholarship funding enables us to finance a higher percentage of need and helps to reduce student debt upon graduation. It closes the widening gap between what a private college education costs and what families are able to afford. Not only does scholarship fulfill our mission, it diversifies our student body and invites a breadth of perspectives, ideas and opportunities for innovation.
A University on the Move
With Faith and Strength to Dare: The Campaign for Saint Joseph’s University enabled us to create a campus that has significantly elevated the student life experience on Hawk Hill. Combine this foundation with the unwavering commitment of Saint Joseph’s faculty and staff, whose deep loyalty toward enhancing the educational experience for our students drives everything they do, and you have a picture of Saint Joseph’s University today.
The quality of any university – its excellence, reputation and ability to grow – is measured by the quality of its students and faculty. “This is not simply perception,” says University Provost Brice Wachterhauser, PhD. “Talented and motivated students from diverse backgrounds strengthen the educational experience for everyone. They contribute fresh ideas and enhance the quality of classroom discussion, produce novel research, shine in athletic competition and model leadership and commitment to service.” In addition, these students help attract top faculty who want to be teaching bright and inquisitive young people. These students challenge us to constantly improve, to do “more” for the greater good.
Gateway to a Bright Future
Saint Joseph’s strategic roadmap, Plan 2020: Gateway to the Future, and our new academic plan, Seeking the Magis (2012-2015), builds upon our momentum to impact future generations in unprecedented fashion. Fr. Gillespie has underscored Saint Joseph’s commitment to academic distinction, and our marketing campaign that premiered during the 2012 Summer Olympics has placed a bright spotlight on a university on the move locally, nationally and internationally.
Through Plan 2020, new undergraduate majors and master’s programs, online offerings and degree completion curricula are being enhanced to reflect both the university’s mission and student interests.
“The Seeking the Magis academic plan identifies scholarships and endowment as top priorities if Saint Joseph’s is to continue to enhance its academic profile and continually deepen its transformational student experience,” adds Wachterhauser.
The world needs these inspired global citizens who use their talents to seek the magis and live greater for others. Saint Joseph’s University needs your continued support to ensure this legacy continues. Learn more about the President’s Magis Scholarship Initiative and how you can help.
