Carrying the Spirit Forward
I’m pleased to present to you the winter 2015 edition of the President’s Report featuring the myriad ways that benefactor support cascades throughout the University community, carrying the spirit of Saint Joseph’s forward. The stories show how alumni, parents and friends strive for the magis by generously contributing to the University in ways that inspire and motivate.
Recently, Timothy ’76 and Dorothy (Dot) ’76 Fallon were inspired to increase their commitment to their scholarship for Food Marketing students after learning what motivated the philanthropy of John ’60 and Maryanne Post and Sharon Ramsay O’Brien ’76 and Jim O’Brien ’74. The Fallons’ generosity serves as a strong endorsement of the President’s Magis Scholarship Initiative, which continues to gain momentum and now totals $12.3 million and 43 new scholarships.
Five years after opening, the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena and Ramsay Basketball Center have profoundly impacted our intercollegiate athletic teams, campus and surrounding community. Mike and Joyce Hagan’s shared vision of creating a ‘window into SJU’ and a gathering place for the community has been realized. The Hagans have continued their commitment by supporting the installation of a Daktronics video scoreboard, keeping SJU on the leading edge of technology and is “fun for the fans.”
Our story about The Saint Joseph’s Fund describes how increased alumni participation touches many lives and broadens the scope of what SJU can do for our students. Read about the astounding outpouring of support on our Day of Giving, which got a boost when the Board of Trustees challenged SJU to secure 500 donations– a number far exceeded thanks to alumni participation.
From staffing college fairs to hosting accepted student receptions, parents and alumni are carrying the good news of Saint Joseph’s far and wide to recruit the next generation of Hawks. Meanwhile, we remain the beneficiaries of the Bellarmine Guild. The historic women’s group has built a thriving community based on deep personal connections and meaningful philanthropic work.
I’m inspired by these stories and hope you will be as well. Thank you for everything you do for Saint Joseph’s University. Your unwavering commitment inspires the entire community.
Blessings and best wishes,
C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. ’72
